The Interdisciplinary Programs Office (IPO) is a significant development in HKUST’s well-established tradition of innovative teaching, learning and research. Working across and with all Schools, the IPO answers the demand of the community for graduates and researchers who can tackle the increasingly complex issues of our times through a special combination of knowledge and skills. Bringing together two or more different fields of disciplinary study together, the IPO aims to cultivate a different type of educational environment and research experience for those interested in integrating their capabilities and developing original approaches to solution-building. We aim to foster a new breed of competent graduates who are open-minded, versatile and exploratory in their career development.
We administer the interdisciplinary Division of Environment, which provides an excellent opportunity for undergraduate and postgraduate education, research, as well as extensive community outreach programs focused on environmental issues. In addition, our Division of Biomedical Engineering coordinates and promotes leading education and research initiatives in its expertise areas. Research projects in partnership with industry and the community are also encouraged through the Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management and Risk Management and Business Intelligence Program to allow full engagement of our students with the community. The new Individualized Interdisciplinary Major offers a non-traditional, cross-School academic pathway for exceptional Hong Kong and international students with the vision, talents and character to create their own study program.
Capitalizing on HKUST’s academic strengths across a broad spectrum of disciplines, and a physical infrastructure and management style that are conducive to collaborative and interdisciplinary research, the IPO’s postgraduate programs work synergistically to develop fresh insight and solutions in areas of critical importance. They do so by integrating broad based knowledge and diverse skill sets. Research methodology, research presentations and communication skills are all key elements in our programs.
The way forward for IPO will be challenging and at the same time, I’m certain it will be rewarding. We offer cutting-edge degree programs and research opportunities that stand out from the crowd – and help our graduates and partners to do the same.
